Increasingly technological entrepreneurs
The expansion of digital technologies, especially those most closely related with mobile communications, has created the conditions for new business opportunities for the entrepreneurs of this country, as we have seen in each edition of 4YFN, the event created in the context of the Mobile World Congress which will be held this year at the Montjuic site between the 22nd and 24th February. In only three editions, 4YFN has emerged as a reference in the technology start-up sector worldwide, operating not just as a meeting point for this ecosystem, but as a real platform for the business of young entrepreneurs. Barcelona’s success One of the reasons for the success of the event is its location in Barcelona, an established centre for innovation and talent. Its strength is shown in the fact that technology start-ups based in the Catalan capital raised 324 million euros in 2015, which represents 60% of the financing attracted by this type of business in the whole of Spain, according to a report by the Mobile World Capital Barcelona foundation. It also says that Barcelona’s digital ecosystem consists of companies which are on average 4.8 years old, and which have a turnover of 6,000 million euros and employ 9,500 people. In this sense, the role of Fira de Barcelona, with its firm commitment to innovation and entrepreneurs, is important because of the many professional shows it organizes to attract new trends and technologies, and their applications in the business environment. One of these contributions to entrepreneurs is the Bizbarcelona show, which is recognised as a key event in the calendar of the business ecosystem. Its sixth edition will be held in June, and it will once again make a wide range of opportunities available for entrepreneurs, the self-employed and small and medium-sized businesses. Business opportunity It is worth pointing out that, according to the report from GEM-Cataluña for 2014, the latest edition, the level of entrepreneurial activity in Barcelona is 7.3% which is higher than the EU average of 6.9%. Those responsible for this study, the annual results of which will be presented in the context of Bizbarcelona, believe that those who choose to set up a business the current climate see it as an opportunity to do business rather than a way to find work. The profile of the entrepreneur is now that of a person with qualifications, skills and management capacity. In fact, the rate of entrepreneurial activity among those with university degrees is already over 20%. Among younger entrepreneurs, those below the age of 35, the majority are interested in starting up technology projects. Cases such as that of Typeform, a company that specializes in online form design, or Formbytes, who created a kit for building a 3D printer from scratch, are just two examples of talent from Barcelona. E-commerce, the most attractive sector Most investors are drawn to the e-commerce sector, which absorbed 61% of financing in 2015. However, there is variety in Barcelona’s start-up ecosystem, with 13.4% dedicated to e-commerce, 12.8 in the mobile phone sector and 10.8% in business services.
