Swab BarcelonaBetween 26 and 29 September, the Montjuïc site (palace Z6) of Fira de Barcelona is hosting the international Swab Barcelona Art Fair, with the work of more than 300 artists and 60 international galleries on display. Besides its regular sections, this year’s programme has also added innovative proposals to encourage the discovery of artworks and to establish a direct relationship with the viewer.

What’s new at SWAB Barcelona 2019

For the first time, the show features the México en Femenino programme, which will present work by Lucia Vidales, Alida Cervantes, Maria Conejo, Julieta Gil and Berta Koltenuik. The work of these artists centres on the female body as a way of rethinking women’s role in the world and their involvement as active agents in art.

Those who are unable to visit the Montjuïc site can still attend SWAB in real time thanks to the ARTSY platform. The digitalization of the fair means that online visitors can purchase the products on the stands and take part in the scheduled talks, extending the reach of contemporary art to all corners of the world.

Besides this, the collaboration with Aesthetica Magazine means that this edition will see the first Swab Video Corner, The identity Shadow. This space, exclusively devoted to artistic exploration through the medium of video art, develops the diversity in aesthetic experience and the convergence of different disciplines.

Art as a channel for social, political and collective causes is the focus of the new Swab emerging programme, which aims to show that art can also be a tool for exploring political thought. This section will present radical ideas such as that of the Berlin gallery Katharina Maria Raab, which explores and contrasts distinct points of view in relation with power, resistance, social relations and material aspirations through work by artists from Morocco and Germany.

The classics of SWAB Barcelona

As is customary, there are outstanding international and Barcelona art galleries taking part in the Swab general programme such as ADN Galeria, Ana Mas Projects and Rocio Santa Cruz. The fair sees the return of My First Art Fair (MY FAF), in which emerging galleries can participate in an international art event for the first time. Swab offers these new projects the opportunity to make contact with professionals and Swab kidsinstitutions in the sector. On this occasion, the guest galleries are Dilalica (Barcelona), Hiato Projects (Madrid), No Address Gallery (London) and Soyuz (Rio de Janeiro).

For its part, Swab Performance is presenting “La màquina, l’amor i Marcel Proust”, organized in collaboration with the Visual Arts Programme of the Diputació de Barcelona, which explores the relations between the individual, machines and art.

Younger visitors can enjoy our Swab Kids space where they can develop their experience of art, while a range of artists from Barcelona present ideas related with language and communication in the Swab Ephemeral space.

An environmentally committed event

Another of the new features unveiled this year is the effort to make the fair 100% sustainable, in accordance with the ecological values of the organization. The catering provided for the event is therefore aligned with the strategy for eliminating plastic and preventing the generation of waste. As part of this, the official water of Swab Barcelona 2019 will come from fully recyclable bottles made from renewable raw materials, while the furniture is made from recycled cardboard and plastic.
