Fira de Barcelona and the NGO Nutrició Sense Fronteres (Nutrition Without Borders) have donated over 2000 kg of food to social centres in the metropolitan area of Barcelona that are in danger of collapse due to the confinement imposed to deal with the Covid-19 pandemic.
The centres of Sala Baluard (Barcelona), Metzineres (Barcelona), Lluís Companys (Barcelona), Formació i Treball (Barcelona) and La Torrassa (L’Hospitalet de Llobregat) have received cereals, dried fruits and nuts, vegetables, pulses, fruit juice, milk and butter, among other products. This material came from the Gran Via storerooms of GastroFira, the catering department of Fira de Barcelona, and was distributed through Nutrició Sense Fronteres, the organization that Fira collaborates with regularly to dispose of excess food remaining after the trade shows Fira holds.
This action is the latest contribution by the trade fair organization to the fight against the effects of the Covid-19 pandemic. The food donation accompanies the opening of Palau 7 at the Montjuïc site as a refuge for vulnerable members of the population. This facility opened its doors on Wednesday 25 March with 225 beds, which have already been occupied, and can expand its operating capacity to a thousand users.
